Prairie Kitchen #1
Finger Lakes region, NY
2015
The Prairie series debuted at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show in New York in the spring of 2015, displayed as a full kitchen with a complete integrated appliance package from Miele. Shortly after the show ended, a client and friend asked me to design the kitchen, baths, and a home office for the new home they were building in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The Prairie series was fresh in my mind, and its style was a compatible with the understated modern aesthetic of their new house. It occurred to me that I might, by rearranging and adding a few cabinets, the show kitchen might find a happy new owner here. It occurred to me that if I rearranged things and added a few cabinets, the show kitchen could find a happy new owner here.
Prairie employs a frame and panel door system, but unlike most traditional cabinet fronts, the horizontal and vertical framing members have entirely different profiles, resulting in a dramatic detail where curved and straight sloping elements meet. The visual effect is one of gently undulating movement as the eye follows these contours across an elevation of cabinetry. The elements weave a dimensional fabric, subtle in its complexity. Thoroughly modern while warm and nuanced, the finished kitchen suits the couple’s casual lifestyle and melds comfortably with the collection of art and fine craft objects in their airy home.
